One of the most common mistakes new break buyers make is assuming a Pokemon's video game type determines its break slot. It doesn't. Break slots are determined by the Pokemon's TCG energy type — which is sometimes completely different from its game type. This guide covers everything you need to know.
In a Pokemon card break, every slot corresponds to a TCG energy type. When you hold the Fire slot, you receive all cards with a Fire energy symbol (🔥) in the top-right corner of the card. Simple enough — but the confusion starts when Pokemon have different types in the games vs. the TCG.

Fairy type was retired from the Pokemon TCG in 2020 with the start of the Sword & Shield era. All former Fairy-type Pokemon are now Psychic-type. If you see a break offering a "Fairy slot," it's either running legacy rules with older sets or it's incorrect. Modern breaks do not include a Fairy slot.

Dragon type exists in the modern TCG but is rare. Most "Dragon" Pokemon from the games use Psychic, Dark, Metal, or Colorless energy in their TCG cards. Evolving Skies is the main modern set where Dragon is legitimately S-tier because Rayquaza VMAX actually uses Dragon energy. In most other sets, the Dragon slot is weak specifically because all the "dragon-looking" Pokemon use different energy types.

No. Ghost-type Pokemon in the games are usually Psychic-type in the TCG. There is no Ghost slot in standard modern breaks.
