How slot prices are set, what determines expected value, and how to calculate whether a break slot is worth buying before you commit.
View Current Breaks βBreak slot pricing is based on expected value (EV) β the statistical value of all cards that type is likely to pull, averaged across many breaks. A breaker sets slot prices by calculating the total potential card values for each type slot in the set, then pricing each slot to ensure the sum of all slot prices covers the product cost plus the breaker's margin.
Premium types (Fire in Darkness Ablaze, Dragon in Evolving Skies) have higher EV because the set's most valuable cards belong to those types. These slots cost more to reflect the higher probability of valuable pulls. Standard types (Grass, Fighting in low-chase sets) have lower EV and cost less.
Expected Value = (Probability of pulling card X) Γ (Value of card X), summed across all possible pulls for that type. Premium slots have EV close to or above their slot cost; standard slots have EV below cost. The "fair" price of any slot is approximately its EV β but breaks include entertainment value too.
Fire (Darkness Ablaze), Dragon (Evolving Skies), Dark (Obsidian Flames). Highest EV, highest cost, most demand.
Water, Psychic, Lightning in sets with strong secondary pulls. Solid EV, moderate demand.
Grass, Fighting, Normal in most sets. Lower EV but lower cost β can occasionally hit surprise pulls.
All types same price, assigned randomly. Good for sets with more evenly distributed value.

Before buying any slot, calculate: Is my slot price β€ EV? EV is roughly: (pull rate of top card) Γ (card value) + (pull rates of secondary cards) Γ (their values). For a one-in-two-box Charizard VMAX SR at $100+ average, EV per box = $50. If the Fire slot costs $40, that's positive EV β but only in the long run across many breaks.
Even positive-EV slots can go cold. Any single break is random. Think of slot cost like a ticket price β the EV tells you the fair price, but you may pull nothing valuable in any given break. Buy slots you can afford to lose, and treat the live break experience as part of what you're paying for.
Because the set's most valuable Fire-type cards (Charizard) are worth significantly more than the most valuable Grass-type cards. Slot prices reflect expected value β higher EV = higher slot price.
It's possible but not reliable as a strategy. In aggregate across many breaks, premium slots in high-EV sets can be roughly EV-neutral or slightly positive. In any individual break, you might pull nothing or pull a $200+ card. Think of breaks as entertainment with the chance to profit β not an investment strategy.
Premium slots in high-pull-rate sets offer the best EV: Fire in Darkness Ablaze/Brilliant Stars, Dragon in Evolving Skies, Psychic in Fusion Strike/Lost Origin. But "best value" also depends on the breaker's slot pricing β compare slot price to estimated EV before buying.
